Some common standards and abbreviations
MDF Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF)
MDF Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is made from compressed wooden fibres. MDF makes a very strong and stable board that can be painted or have laminates applied to the panel.
MFC Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC)
MFC Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC) is a resin impregnated paper that is applied to the face of the chipboard. It is made of woodchips compressed and glued together to form a flat panel.
FR Fire Retardent (FR) fabric
FR Fire Retardent (FR) fabric has been impregnated with a chemical or has a special coating on the back that means it resists catching fire or allowing the flame to spread.
PVC Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
PVC Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is a flexible, durable, recyclable soft plastic that can be used to make toys and fittings or with a woven backing that allows it to be used as an upholstery fabric.
PU Polyurethane (PU)
PU Polyurethane (PU) is a plastic moulded to form shapes. It is very durable and hard to the touch, able to withstand everyday knocks and bumps.
PET Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)
PET Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is a plastic that naturally forms to give a clear transparent finish and is used in situations where glass would not be suitable due to weight and safety.
Phthalate Free Are plastics free from plasticisers commonly added to make them more flexible, some have been linked to human health concerns, but there is little firm evidence to suggest the risks are great.
EYFS Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
EYFS Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a set of standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to five.
BS EN 1729
BS EN 1729 is a relatively new standard, in two parts, that specifies the dimensions, strength and stability of educational furniture. It applies to tables and chairs giving recommendations for the pupils heights and the correct chair seat height to working surface height.
BS 7176
The BS 7176 British Standard gives the specification for the resistance to ignition of upholstered furniture for seating in various contract situations.
BS EN 1021
The BS EN 1021standard allows the assessment of the ignitability of upholstered furniture using various sources such as matches and cigarettes.
